Alaska Psychiatric Institute (API) – Adult Civil Units

The Alaska Psychiatric Institute (API) provides acute, inpatient mental health services for adolescents and adults requiring hospitalization for a psychiatric crisis.  API is the state psychiatric hospital and is located in Anchorage.

The hospital includes three Adult Civil Units for patients age 18 and over with a total capacity of sixty (60) beds.

March 13, 2018
The required renovations at API continue to go well and are on schedule. At this point in time, the Susitna Unit is now closed and the refurbished Katmai Unit is reopened, but this means that API’s bed capacity is now reduced by 26 adult, acute beds, meaning that API has only 54 beds open:  the 10-bed adolescent, forensic, and longer-term units are all open, as is Katmai (24 beds). We estimate that the Susitna Unit work will be completed no later than April 16th.

However, we do want to let providers know that it is entirely possible, because of API’s RN shortages, that once the hospital retrofit project is fully complete, we still may not be able to return to full capacity at 80 beds. We will know more by the end of March and will inform providers at that time what we anticipate API’s bed capacity will be at the end of the renovation project.  Only time and significant recruitment efforts will resolve this particular matter. We truly apologize for the difficulties a reduction in API’s bed capacity creates for your programs and facilities.
