Alaska's Tobacco Quit Line and Text2Quit

Text2Quit helps participants stay engaged with their Quit Coach, use medications correctly, manage urges, and prevent relapse; all from their mobile phones.

Based on U.S. Public Health Service Clinical Practice Guidelines, Text2Quit provides a series of broadcast and interactive text messages that are personalized to a participant's Quit Plan and sent out over the course of a four month period - both before and after the quit date. Text messages are integrated with Alaska’s Tobacco Quit Line, allowing participants to see their data and track their progress whether they are talking to a Quit Coach, or interacting with mobile phones.

Key Features:

  • Up to 300 text messages tailored to an individual's quit plan
  • Coaching call reminders and prompts to instantly connect with a Quit Coach
  • Medication reminders and helpful suggestions
  • Tips and games to help manage urges

How Does it Work?
After consenting to enroll in Text2Quit during a conventional phone coaching session, participants will receive text messages tailored to match their Quit Plan and profile, established by a Quit Coach.

Here are examples of Text2Quit message topics:

  • Setting a Quit Date
  • A participant can easily set or change their quit date with a text message. The new quit date will be updated in the participants profile.
  • Managing Urges
  • Text2Quit messages will provide extra quit support for recent quitters wherever they are. Messages include tips on coping skills, games and quizzes, and motivational and educational reminders.
  • Alaska’s Tobacco Quit Line Program Reminders
  • Participants will be reminded by text message about upcoming Quit Coach calls and how to use their medications correctly.
  • Pre and Post Quit Tracking
  • Text2Quit will monitor participants' tobacco usage before they quit and their urge levels after they quit. This feature both records data that will be visible to a Quit Coach, and provides the participant with feedback and advice based on their input.
  • General Engagement Content
  • Participants will be sent increasingly frequent supportive and motivational messages as their Quit Date approaches. There are up to 4 weeks of messages leading up to the Quit Date and 4 months of messages following the Quit Date.

Web Coach:

Alaskans looking to quit or to stay quit who enroll by phone or web with Alaska’s Tobacco Quit Line can ask for Web Coach, an online program that supports and assists tobacco users throughout the quitting process – from creating a Quitting Plan to learning strategies for staying quit for life.

Through Alaska’s Tobacco Quit Line support, Alaskans will develop a Quitting Plan that includes selecting a quit date, choosing a medication (if any), learning how to  manage urges and cravings to use tobacco, how to control their environment and how to get the support they need to quit and stay quit.

  • Once the Quitting Plan has been developed, with Web Coach participants can view and track their quit progress online.

    Those preparing to quit can:
    • identify patterns and triggers by tracking when and where they smoke
    • calculate how much they are currently spending on tobacco.
  • Once a participant has quit, more exciting features of Web Coach provide an enhanced suite of support tools, letting them:
    • track how many calls they have taken and how many are remaining from a Quit Coach
    • be immediately connected with a Quit Coach over the phone with a “click-to-call” function
    • be connected with other tobacco users online who are looking to quit
    • engage with other participants via discussion forums, read expert blogs posted on a regular basis on quitting topics, and have the option to share their profile page with others
    • use quit tracker to see how long they have been tobacco free, how much money they have saved and how much time has been added back to their daily life since quitting tobacco.
