Pediatric Online Education and Training
The following courses provide certified EMT’s and licensed paramedics (MICP’s) in the State of Alaska with focused online pediatric education and training. All courses listed below are approved for Alaska State EMT recertification. Several of the courses are available free of charge and those that require a nominal fee have been denoted.
Online Training for Prehospital Providers
- Autism Awareness Training for First Responders
This course will teach providers how to recognize autistic traits and characteristics, and how to reduce or eliminate dangerous behaviors that could lead to either the responder or the autistic individual being harmed and also save valuable time on-scene. All first responders, EMS personnel, and firefighters will benefit from additional topics like search and rescue, proper restraining, challenges in the field and seizures. CECBEMS accredited for five hours of continuing education credit. The Autism Awareness Training for First Responders course requires a $1 fee when accessed via newsletter link.
- Illinois EMSC: Pediatric Hyperglycemia and Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA)
This course will enhance emergency care of pediatric patients who present with hyperglycemia and/or DKA. It will discuss a number of topics including appropriate: assessment; management; prevention of complications; disposition, and patient & parent/caregiver education. 3 continuing education hours have been approved by the Illinois Department of Public Health Division of Emergency Medical Services and Highway Safety. Course expires on October 31, 2013.
- Illinois EMSC: Pediatric Seizures
This course will enhance the emergency care of pediatric patients who present with seizure activity. It will discuss a number of topics including appropriate: assessment; management; prevention of complications; disposition, and patient & parent/caregiver education. 1.5 continuing education hours have been approved by the Illinois Department of Public Health Division of Emergency Medical Services and Highway Safety. Course expires on July 31, 2013.
- New Mexico EMSC Online Courses
A variety of courses on pediatric trauma and emergencies are offered through the New Mexico EMSC website and are CECBEMS accredited for one hour of continuing education credit per course. There is a $5.00 processing fee for national CECBEMS CE certificate.
- North Carolina EMSC: Pediatric Trauma Course for 911 Telecommunicators
This course illustrates how 911 telecommunicators play a critical role in the prehospital management of injured children. 911 telecommunicators will have the opportunity to learn about the scope of pediatric trauma, how they can quickly deploy EMS resources, ways they can assist EMS’s response by collecting valuable information, and how they can work with dispatched services to minimize response and scene times en route to definitive care. 0.15 continuing education units have been approved by the North Carolina Area Health Education Center Program (EMSC Targeted Issue Grantee). This course requires a $5 fee.
- North Carolina EMSC: Injured Children-Right Decision, Right Destination
This course offers an overview of pediatric trauma where EMS providers will have the opportunity to learn about the scope of pediatric trauma, revisit the keys of their pediatric patient assessment, review the benefits of specialized trauma center resources, and examine how trauma pre-planning tools can assist them in making the best transport decisions for their patients. 0.15 continuing education units have been approved by the North Carolina Area Health Education Center Program (EMSC Targeted Issue Grantee). This course requires a $5 fee.
- North Carolina EMSC: Here to Help--Proper Child Restraints in Emergency Vehicles
This 60-minute program addresses the importance of restraining children when being transported in an ambulance and demonstrates the use of a variety of child restraint devices. Students that complete the quiz at the end of the training and receive a passing grade of at least 70% will be eligible to apply for one hour of continuing education credit.

These courses are designed for instructors that would like to provide CME training.
- Child Abuse and Neglect: A Continuing Education and Teaching Resource for the Prehospital Provider
EMS providers can be the eyes and ears of the medical community, because of their unique position of often being the only individuals who have access to a patient’s home. Their ability to assess and perceptively deal with this problem can have a tremendous impact on the morbidity and mortality of children. This document helps create awareness and identify various risk factors of child abuse and neglect; emphasize the unique role and contributions of prehospital medical providers in recognizing and reporting child abuse and neglect and lastly introduces legal aspects of reporting.
- Illinois EMSC: Pediatric Mild Traumatic Head Injury
This module enhances the care of pediatric patients who present with mild traumatic head injury. It will discuss a number of topics including: assessment; management; disposition & patient education, and complications. Course expires on Sept. 30, 2013.
- NAEMT Emergency Pediatric Care (EPC) Combined Provider Slides
A variety of EPC PowerPoint courses that cover pediatric airway, breathing and oxygen; hypoperfusion and shock; trauma; cardiac emergencies; common medical emergencies; newborn resuscitation; CHSHCN; and child abuse and neglect.
- Pediatric Disaster Planning and Preparedness
This course includes five modules: Why Disaster Planning for Children Is Needed; Accessing Community Risk for Disasters Involving Children; Preparing the Community for Disasters Involving Children; Responding to Disasters Involving Children (Assessment/Triage); and Responding to Disasters Involving Children (Resuscitation/Treatment.).

Training Resources for Emergency Department Personnel
These courses are designed for emergency department personnel.
- Family Presence in the Emergency Department
This course targets emergency department nurses and includes three modules: evidence for family presence (FP), introduction to FP, and implementation of a FP program.
- Illinois EMSC: Pediatric Mild Traumatic Head Injury for Nurses
This module enhances the care of pediatric patients who present with mild traumatic head injury. It will discuss a number of topics including: assessment; management; disposition & patient education, and complications. Course expires on Sept. 30, 2013.
- Illinois EMSC: Pediatric Moderate Sedation
This PowerPoint presentation will help audience become familiar with principles and standards underlying safe and effective pediatric moderate sedation, review optimal pre-sedation patient evaluation, review commonly used sedative/analgesic drugs, review potential patient complications, and provide resources to improve patient safety and (EMSC Targeted Issue Grantee).
- Washington EMSC: Acute Assessment and Management of Pediatric Trauma
This course targets physicians and nurses of early care to injured children, and includes seven modules: Initial Stabilization and Transfer of Pediatric Trauma; Pediatric Airway and Breathing; Pediatric Shock, including Vascular Access; Pediatric Head Injuries; Pediatric Blunt Abdominal and Chest Trauma; Pediatric Sedation and Analgesia; and Complications of Pediatric Multi-Organ Trauma and Other Injuries (EMSC Targeted Issue Grantee).
