Alaska BRFSS Health Profiles: Metropolitan/Micropolitan Statistical Areas - Age [FLASH]
This page is used to select InstantAtlas maps to display three-year averages of BRFSS variables by metro/micropolitan statistical areas by age status (i.e., 65+ years of age). There are two metropolitan statistical areas (MSA) and three micropolitan statistical areas (μSAs) in Alaska. The Anchorage metropolitan statistical area is composed of the Municipality of Anchorage and the Matanuska-Susitna Borough. The Anchorage MSA is reported by its constituent parts. The Fairbanks MSA and the three μSAs are each composed of single boroughs. The boroughs and census areas outside of the metropolitan and micropolitan statistical areas are considered rural. The BRFSS health profiles are reported according to the seven areas.
The user is limited actual prevalence estimates (termed "crude rates") as the respondents have been divided into those from 18 through 64 years of age versus those who are 65 years of age and older. Crude rates are useful for determining the percentage of the population at risk.
InstantAtlas maps use space, color, magnitude, and direction to facilitate data visualization of health risk factors on maps and charts. Three templates or formats are used to display the BRFSS health profiles. The first two templates require use of an Adobe Flash-compatible browser. The Single Map template combines a map, bar chart, and times-series chart for viewing a single variable across all regions. A second, visual option is the Area Profiles - Spine Chart template which looks at multiple variables for a single region. A non-graphical option is available in the HTML Profiles template. Individuals desiring a text-based or accessible alternative, should choose the HTML Profile option.
Data files are available in comma-separated values (CSV) and Excel XSLX formats.
