Public Health Nursing
in Alaska

The Section of Public Health Nursing employs approximately 120 public health nurses (PHN) throughout this great state. Positions include direct service public health nurses, advanced nurse practitioners, public health nurse managers and administrators, and nurse consultants. The Alaska PHN Team includes public health nurse aides, health program associates, administrative clerks, and administrative assistants/supervisors/managers. Serving the public health needs of Alaska takes all of us working together in 22 public health centers and in over 250 villages across the state.

Alaska's public health nurses work in settings ranging from large urban public health centers to one nurse/one clerk stations. Itinerant public health nurses travel by air, boat or other motorized vehicle to a group of remote rural villages, taking public health to even the smallest communities. Cultural diversity is central to the practice of public health nursing in Alaska. Immigrants from all over the world come to live and work in Alaska. Working as a PHN with Alaska's Native Cultures is a unique opportunity and privilege that will always be cherished.

Public health nursing in Alaska is both challenging and highly rewarding. It is known for its community-centered focus, autonomy, broad-based generalist practice applications and creative nursing interventions.
