Adapted Physical Activity
In 2013 and 2014, the Alaska Health and Disability Program hired Accessible PE Consulting, LLC to deliver Adapted Physical Activity workshops in school districts throughout Alaska. The owner of Accessible PE Consulting, LLC, Pamela Skogstad, BS,MA, CAPE, is a nationally recognized expert in the field of adapted physical activity. Pam traveled to Kenai, Bethel, Valdez, Fairbanks, Alaska Gateway, and Juneau to provide 1-2 day workshops for school administrators, physical education teachers, and support staff. During the two year period, 154 staff from 52 schools were trained in adapted physical activity methods. Each participant contributed to the Teaming for Success resource booklet that includes various types of adapted physical activity based on age, disability, and activity. In fall 2015, the Alaska Health and Disability Program will send the Teaming for Success
resource booklet to every school in Alaska.
In 2015 and 2016, Pam will travel to three additional locations in Alaska to provide additional adapted physical activity workshops.
Access to Fitness
Access to health clubs and fitness facilities is also a key concern for individuals experiencing disabilities. “Removing Barriers to Health Clubs and Fitness Facilities
,” a booklet developed by the Center for Universal Design and the North Carolina Office on Disability and Health, provides guidelines to help fitness providers make their facilities as accessible as possible.
