Maternal and Child Health Epidemiology (MCH) is pleased to announce the publication of the Alaska MCH Data Book 2012: Birth Defects Surveillance Edition. This is the second comprehensive analysis of ABDR data, and acts as a follow-up to the Alaska MCH Data Book 2005: Birth Defects Surveillance Edition. This data book provides a detailed descriptive epidemiology of the prevalence and distribution of major congenital anomalies among Alaskan populations.

The data book is divided into chapters based on the anatomical site of the malformation, beginning with the most prevalent conditions and ending with the least prevalent conditions. Detailed epidemiological information is given for each anatomical grouping, including temporal trends, geographic distributions, as well as epidemiological characteristics.

We encourage readers to use the data presented in this book to improve the health of Alaska's children. Please read the section entitled "How to Use this Book." This section emphasizes the importance of becoming familiar with the data limitations section of the book and the surveillance methods we used for collecting information on the occurrence of birth defects in Alaska. Understanding the data limitations and surveillance methods will help you to correctly interpret the information presented.
