Overview

Alaskans who are ill, frail or injured may need a wheelchair ramp or other changes to their home to maintain their independence.
If they are eligible for one of Alaska's Medicaid waivers, the state “environmental modification,” or E-Mod, program may help pay for accessibility construction projects:

When people need accessibility work done to their home, they contact their care coordinator. The care coordinator determines what changes the clients needs and requests cost estimates from Medicaid certified contractors, and calls Medicaid-certified contractors for three cost estimates. Jobs range from small – $200 or less – up to $10,000. Contractors only submit estimates if they wish. Senior & Disabilities Services approves an estimate, and the care coordinator manages the necessary paperwork for the contractor. (Use this link to pull up links to the different REQUEST FOR COST ESTIMATE forms for each job.) Once the work is finished, the contractor sends a bill to Affiliated Computer Systems, the company that handles Alaska Medicaid billing. Affiliated Computer Systems then pays the contractor.
