Alaska exceeds nationwide employment rates by breaking down barriers to employment for people with disabilities.
Disability employment rates are on the rise nationwide at 28.6% but here in Alaska we are sitting at 41.1%.
“Alaska has always been very progressive in terms of employment and people with disabilities," said Karen Ward, Director of the Center for Human Development at the University of Alaska Anchorage. "It’s a result of a number of initiatives that advocates and stake holders and people with disabilities in Alaska have been involved in, primarily in removing barriers to employment."
Ian Miner an employee of the Alaska Governor's Council on Disabilities & Special Education loves his work. Employment offers him independence he might not otherwise have. “To me, working is the highlight," Miner said.
