Public Health Meaningful Use Measures for Alaska

The Alaska Department of Health & Social Services (DHSS) has the capability to support:

  • Immunization Reporting (EPs & EHs)
  • Electronic Laboratory Reporting  (EHs only)
  • Syndromic Surveillance (EHs only)
  • Cancer Registry Reporting (EPs only)
  • There are no other specialized registries that DHSS is supporting for Meaningful Use (MU) Stage 2

The EP or EH can request an exclusion to CMS based on the following criteria:

  • If the EP or EH does not collect public health (immunization, electronic laboratory reporting, or syndromic surveillance data during the reporting) period, OR
  • The public health agency does not have the capacity to receive the data. (NOTE - DHSS does have the capacity to receive public health related objectives for Meaningful Use)

Refer to CMS Guidelines for Meaningful Use for additional information.

More details on Stage 1 and Stage 2 Meaningful Use, Public Health Reporting, and the Register of Intent process are available on our Meaningful Use page.

Alaska eHealth Network Health Information Exchange

Alaska eHealth Network (AeHN) Health Information Exchange (HIE) is currently being deployed statewide. AeHN HIE is a secure electronic exchange of patient information, which allows health care providers a quick, secure, reliable access to patient health records.  AeHN is a non-profit organization governed by a board of directors from across Alaska with representation from consumers, hospitals, physicians, businesses, and state government. These leaders are committed to securing protected health information at all times to ensure it is only accessed by authorized individuals for authorized use, by law, for treatment and payment. To learn more about AeHN, please visit their website at: of contact Alaska eHealth Network at:, (907) 770-2626, 1-866-966-9030

Alaska DHSS and AeHN are working closely together to implement efficiencies in health information exchange throughout the state.

All EPs, EHs, and CAHs  must use Alaska eHealth Network HIE to satisfy their MU Public Health reporting requirements. Organizations that are already interfaced directly with Alaska Division of Public Health reporting systems will not be required to transition to reporting via the HIE immediately, but should plan for this transition. For more details visit the Meaningful Use page.
