Record entries for the 4th of July Pie Iron Chef Challenge

The 4th of July celebration came early to the Anchorage Pioneer Home with a pie contest, warm sunny weather and music from the Alaska Button Box Gang. The residents’ planter boxes on the patio were in full bloom adding color to the festivities. Activities director, Robert (Bob) Montague was master of ceremonies and put together another fun time at the home.

Judging the delicious pies for the annual Iron Skillet awards was happily volunteered by Anchorage Pioneer Home Director, Amanda Lofgren, Alaska DHSS Communications Director, Katie Marquette, and Pioneer Homes Admissions Coordinator, Grace Schwedler.

With a record number of entries this year, a strawberry packed, chocolate brownie combination with cream on top took the grand prize. Other winners included a pina colada cream pie and of course, the great American appie pie.

The contest was open to staff, residents, and family with no age limits for the entrants which allowed young ten-year Megan Spaeth to earn an iron skillet award for her delicious peaches and cream pie. She is the great granddaughter of a resident of the Anchorage Pioneer Home.
