Your health is important to us! We are glad you're seeking information and services to take charge of your health. Public health nursing staff around the state offer services for teens (ages 19 and under), including:
In Alaska, all health care services offered at family planning clinics are confidential. This means that you don't need written permission from your parent or guardian to get services like birth control, annual exams, pregnancy testing, and testing for sexually transmitted infections (STIs).
It also means we will not share information with anyone about your visit unless you ask us to. However, in certain situations we are mandated by law to report if you tell us that you are being abused, neglected, or have thoughts of harming yourself or others. In these cases, we have support services and resources for you as well.
Ask your nurse any questions you might have about the confidentiality of your vist. We are here for you! In addition, we always encourage teens to talk with a parent or other trusted adult about their health care concerns.
While all public health centers offer services for teens, including STI screening and family planning services, some health centers have special walk-in times specifically for teen clients. Call your nearest public health center (locations) for more information and to see if there are special hours for teens. Some clinics take same-day appointments, so be sure to ask about that when you call.
Our services are provided on a sliding fee scale (meaning fees are based on income) and we don't deny anyone service if they can't pay. Your health is important to us; it's less awkward to talk about it ahead of time, so call if you have concerns about the cost of your visit.
