Alaska Chronic Disease Brief Report

Cost of Chronic Conditions in Alaska

Health Systems Collaboration Unit

Graph shows how different preventable risk factors are linked to different chronic conditions. All six risk factors listed (tobacco use, inactivity, unhealthy diet, obesity, high cholesterol, high blood pressure) are linked to the first four chronic conditions — heart disease and stroke [2-7], cancer [8-13], diabetes [14-19], and dementia [20-25]. Tobacco is also linked to arthritis [26-28] and chronic respiratory diseases [29]. Inactivity and obesity are both linked to arthritis [26-28]. References are listed in brackets and can be found at: https://health.alaska.gov/dph/Chronic/Documents/HSC_RiskFactorChronicDiseaseLinksGraphic.pdf.
