Alaska Supplemental Tobacco Behavioral Risk Factor Survey

Overview:

The lifestyle choices we make on a daily basis play a vital role in shaping our health status and lifespan. While heredity and environment play a part, the leading causes of death in Alaska (heart disease, cancer, unintentional injuries) are closely related to behaviors and lifestyle factors such as diet, exercise, tobacco and alcohol use, as well as preventive health practices. Changes in lifestyle could prevent diseases as well as premature deaths.

In addition to the CDC BRFSS survey, the Alaska BRFSS program fielded the Alaska Supplemental Tobacco BRFSS Survey annually from 2004 to 2020 using a similar methodology. The survey was designed in collaboration with the Tobacco Prevention and Control program to provide an ongoing data collection system focused on tobacco use, knowledge, and attitudes which may contribute to chronic diseases within Alaskan Adults. This anonymous, telephone-based, random digit dial survey provides representative data for Alaska. For examples of how data from this survey are used, please see Tobacco Publications.

The survey was discontinued in 2021. Key tobacco use questions have been moved to the Standard BRFSS. Other needed tobacco data will be collected through new data methods and managed by the Alaska Tobacco Prevention and Control Program.
