The Alaska Cancer Registry (ACR) is a population-based cancer surveillance system and is funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). ACR collects data on all newly diagnosed cases of cancer (including benign brain) for the State of Alaska. The registry operates under several statutes and regulations required for compliance with the Cancer Registries Amendment Act, Public Law 102-515; Alaska Administrative Code 7 AAC 27.011 - Reporting of cancer and brain tumors; and Alaska Statutes Sec. 18.05.042 - Access to health care records.

Purpose of the Registry

ACR collects a wide variety of information to determine cancer incidence, mortality, treatment and survival. The data are used to:

  • determine the incidence of cancer in Alaska with respect to geographic and demographic characteristics
  • monitor trends over time
  • monitor early detection, evaluate the effectiveness of cancer control programs and identify areas in need of public health interventions
  • determine how Alaska compares with the rest of the Nation
  • provide a database and serve as a resource for health planners, medical professionals, researchers and others concerned about cancer

NPCR Registry of Distinction For 13 of the last 14 years, ACR has received the Registry of Distinction certification from CDC’s National Program of Cancer Registries. The certification is based on an annual review of data quality, completeness, and timeliness. In 2023, ACR received this certification for cancer data collected for the diagnosis year 2020.

U.S. Cancer Statistics Registry for Surveillance CertificationFor the last 14 years, ACR has been designated a U.S. Cancer Statistics (USCS) Registry for Surveillance by CDC’s National Program of Cancer Registries. This recognition is based on an annual review of data quality, completeness, and timeliness, and qualifies ACR’s data for inclusion in the USCS national database. USCS data are used to inform and evaluate prevention efforts, cancer burden, and disparities on a national level. More information about USCS can be found on https://www.cdc.gov/cancer/uscs/htm. In 2022, ACR received this designation for cancer data collected for the diagnosis year 2020.

NAACCR Gold CertificationFor 23 of the last 24 years, ACR has received the highest level of certification available (Gold Standard) from the North American Association of Central Cancer Registries (NAACCR). The certification is based on an annual review of data quality, completeness, and timeliness. In 2023, ACR received the Gold Standard for cancer data collected for the diagnosis year 2020.
