Get Moving and Play
Truth? Most of us are not getting the recommended amount of daily physical activity (PDF). It's challenging. Maybe we got out of the habit when our indoor exercise places closed, it got too icy or cold, we experienced a new physical limitation, or we just got too busy. We get it. We're not here to nag. We've all struggled with this.
Here's the funny thing, however. Once you start to move your body, you see the results quickly. You have more energy. Sleep better. Feel better. Play with your kids and the dog more. Step a little lighter. Laugh more.
Over time, you can reduce the risk factors for numerous diseases and conditions, including cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes, and COVID-19. Research has even shown that people who exercise more do better at abstaining from substance use. It's kind of amazing, and it can take as little as 10 minutes a day. Once you get going, you may find you want to do more. It may be contagious (in a good way this time) as friends and family members join you.
Statewide programs such as Play Every Day and the Healthy Futures Challenge can help kids get more regular exercise. And adding a wide variety of movement to our days in ways that are fun, affordable, and sustainable can help us all.
Want to move more but don't know where to start? It's a good idea to start with your doctor and a complete physical, especially if you haven't had one in a while. You can also visit this Directory of Healthcare Safety Net Providers to access affordable healthcare services near you.
